St. Martin’s Island

Out of civilization, surrounded by the sea, there is a small island on north-eastern part of Bay of Bengal which is St. Martin’s Island. This island forms the southernmost part of Bangladesh.

A 250 years old tiny island with an area of 8 sq. km, length of 6 km, a width of 0.5 km. The population is as same as the island which is nearly 4000. Although the island is small it is famous for coconut. The locals call their island “Narikel Jinjira” meaning coconut island. Not only that this island is also famous for cinnamon. That’s why locals also call the island “Daruchini Dwip” meaning cinnamon island.

This wonderful island is situated 9 km from Cox’s Bazar (the largest sea beach in the world). The only way to go there is either by steamer boat or speedboat or ship and the journey takes 2.5-4 hours. One of the interesting facts is that all the telecommunications operators in Bangladesh established communication facility in such a way that it does not damage the nature.

St. Martin’s island is surrounded by sea. Perhaps this is the reason why the sea-food of that island is really tasty.

Though this island is small and lacks modern facilities, there are a lot of hotels there that gives the tourists the real feelings of vacation. Unfortunately, there is electricity supply in this island. However, all the hotels run generator until 11pm and rely on solar power. This island gives tourists the real vibe of staying on an island. If someone is looking for candle-lit dinner then this is a perfect island.

St. Martin’s Island has many natural beauties that are Sandy Beach, Live Corals,, Peaceful Environment and Deep Blue Water. In a day it may possible to walk around the island. In addition, there is an extended part of this island known as “Chera Dip”. This part increases the beauty of the island to a whole new level. However, tourist should go there early and return before sunset because no people live in this part.

Vistors can see the sunrise and sunset from this island and near Saint Martin's Resort rocky peninsula. Probably these are the best places for observing sunset.

About a million of years old Rock formed from Coral is in the southern part of the Island. This place is known as Rock Beach and you may go there by foot. Surrounding the island you may see many Coral and Rock.

Night view in this island is probably the best. Visitors are often seen at night on the beach lying down and counting starts.

Most people in St. Martin’s Island has learned quite a few languages with the initiatives taken by the government such as English, French, Spanish and so on. This is because learning multiple languages helps in communication with tourists.
