A trip to Pondicherry, India

Beaches, a range of food, and a twist on Indian culture is what you experience when you visit the south of India and the city of Pondicherry. The city sits along the south east coast of India and is heavily influenced by the French culture in certain areas. This influence comes about due to it being a part of French India until 1954. It’s definitely a different and a welcomed experience.

What the city of Pondicherry has to offer is far more than just beaches, street markets or French Quarters. It is a destination that offers serenity, allowing you to sit back and forget about anything else and simply enjoy the time spent here. Much like Mumbai, the best time to visit Pondy (as it is affectionately called by locals) is around Mid-late October to early February. The temperature is most pleasant around this time.

A French inspired meal in Pondy is definitely key to ensuring you get the most out of your stay, and what better way to start off the day than by having breakfast at one of the French café/restaurants such as Café dés Arts. Croissants, baguettes and coffee. The coffee was definitely the best I’ve tried in India in all the French parts of Pondicherry. There’s just something amazing about European made coffee isn’t there?

After a filling breakfast, take a walk down to Chunnambar River where you can take a boat ride up to Paradise Beach, which is a great place to relax, or have fun running around on the soft sand, or splashing around in water by taking part in activities such as jet skiing, canoeing and kayaking. Or if you’re in the mood to get in touch with nature, then perhaps scuba diving is another option, with Pondicherry being the only diving spot on the eastern coast of India. Scuba diving is organised Temple Adventures, where you are offered excellent training and certification courses.

After spending a few hours doing those activities and finishing with lunch, if you’re in the mood for some sightseeing, then a trip to Gingee Fort is worth the time. Forts throughout India have a lot of history and culture engrained in them, and this is no different. It also makes for a worthy photo or two.

To wind down, I recommend making use of the cheap alcohol prices if that tickles your fancy. Otherwise there is always finely made coffee to enjoy along the Promenade Beach along with brilliant restaurants worth the price. When you’re in India, I highly recommend making it a must to visit Pondy.
